Teaching Internet Safety http://kidswebsafety.com/teaching-internet-safety/ http://kidswebsafety.com/teaching-internet-safety/#comments Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:12:35 +0000 admin http://kidswebsafety.com/?p=47 You are responsible for teaching internet safety to your kids. This is something that parents of the past did not have to worry about. Obviously, this was because the internet did not exist. In today’s day and age every child should begin to use the internet at an early age; there is no debating this.

Here are three tips for teaching internet safety:

1. Have an outline of what you want to touch on. You don’t need to write down every last detail, but at least have an idea of what you are interested in talking about. This can and probably will change as you move forward, and there is nothing wrong with that. An outline is meant to be nothing more than a simple guide.

2. Ask questions. You should ask questions as you go along. Do you understand the difference between a safe and unsafe site? What will you do if somebody you do not know contacts you? These are the types of questions to ask your child when teaching internet safety.

3. Encourage questions. Don’t be the only one asking questions. You should encourage your child to speak up and ask anything that is on their mind. This is one of the most important facets of teaching internet safety. You don’t want to lecture your child. Instead, get them involved by letting them ask questions.

These three tips should make it easy on you when teaching internet safety. Believe it or not, this can be educational and fun at the same time.

Safety on YouTube http://kidswebsafety.com/safety-on-youtube/ http://kidswebsafety.com/safety-on-youtube/#comments Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:01:20 +0000 admin http://kidswebsafety.com/?p=40 YouTube is a very popular video sharing website that is popular among those old and young alike. In fact, kids especially love YouTube because of the content that is available. You will find everything from funny video to sports videos and much more. Unfortunately, safety on YouTube is something that parents must be concerned with. Your kids can get in a lot of trouble if they are not sure of what they should and should not be doing on this site.

Safety on YouTube comes down to your children knowing what is right and what is wrong. First and foremost, you have to tell them what they are not allowed to view. Remember, YouTube has a variety of videos. Some of them are suitable for kids and some of them are way out of their league. You need to make it perfectly clear as to what types of videos they should be watching.

What about uploading videos to YouTube? You also need to speak with your kids about this. Even though they may not be interested in this right now, things can and probably will change in the future. Safety on YouTube means making sure your kids know what they are allowed to do, if they are allowed to upload videos at all.

With YouTube growing by the day you can be rest assured that your child will be interested in using the site at some point in time. You need to teach them that safety on YouTube is very important, and that they should obey all rules at all times.

Web Site Safety 101 http://kidswebsafety.com/web-site-safety/ http://kidswebsafety.com/web-site-safety/#comments Thu, 25 Jun 2009 09:50:33 +0000 admin http://kidswebsafety.com/?p=33 When teaching children about web site safety there is a lot that you need to go over. This is not something that you can talk about in a couple of minutes, and then forget about it for the rest of time. Simply put, your children need to get off to a good start on the internet. You need to teach them all about web site safety so they can use this knowledge now as well as into the future. Remember, web site safety is not something that you should take lightly. There are a lot of dangerous sites and shady people who pose a threat to your kids. You don’t want to let something bad happen to them because of your laziness.

The first part of teaching web safety should be based around the types of sites that your kids are allowed to visit. Every parent will have different rules, and you should not be any different. Make sure you only allow your kids to look at web sites that you deem safe and suitable for their age group. You can use special filters and software to ensure that your children do not stray off the path.

Moving on, web site safety also has a lot to do with who your child may meet online. There are a lot of people who use the internet to lure kids into their trap. They are not trying to be nice to your kids, but instead attempting to trick them as to get what they want.

Web site safety encompasses many topics. All of which you should discuss as a parent.

Web Surfing for Kids http://kidswebsafety.com/web-surfing-for-kids/ http://kidswebsafety.com/web-surfing-for-kids/#comments Thu, 25 Jun 2009 09:46:21 +0000 admin http://kidswebsafety.com/?p=29 Just like adults, kids use the internet on a regular basis. The only problem for this is that kids should not be looking at everything that is available online. There are many websites that are far from suitable for kids. This is why you need to know a thing or two about web surfing for kids if you are a parent. The more you teach your child the better chance there is that they will not visit anything online that they should be staying away from.

Before your kids begin using the internet you should let them know what you expect. Tell them about the types of sites they should be using. You may even want to show a few examples to ensure that they are on the right path. Also, encourage your child to ask about a new website before they visit it. This way you can check it out to ensure that the content is safe, and that there are not any other dangers.

With the right settings on your computer, as well as the help of some basic software, you can more or less control your kid’s web surfing habits. You do not want to take away all of their freedom, but blocking sites that they should not be looking at is a very good idea. You can also put on the “safe search” feature as an added level of protection.

Kids should definitely be using the internet. As a parent make sure you know what their web surfing habits are, and that you approve of the sites they visit.
